PUBLICA on tanssitaiteilijoiden Aleks Borysin ja Marysia Stokłosan ohjaama liike- ja koreografiatyöpaja. Työpajassa hyödynnetään liikeimprovisaation työkaluja ja leikitään koregrafian ja erilaisten rakenteiden kanssa. Työparin tutkimusta ja työpajoja motivoi kysymys siitä, millainen yleisö aktivoidaan koreografian keinoin.
Puolankielisen sanan publica kaksoismerkitystä tutkitaan erilaisia tanssin praktiikoita käyttäen. Sanan res-publica osana se viittaa kohti yhteistä ja jaettua (juurena sanat republic ja commonwealth); sanan public (puolaksi widz) kautta se viittaa yleisöön nostaen yleisön katseen pääasialliseksi kokemisen väyläksi (puolaksi nähdä on widzieć).
Borys ja Stokłosa ymmärtävät tanssin elämän liikkeenä ja kehossa olemisena. Koreografia on heille ensisijainen tapa muodostaa organisaatioita ja ryhmiä, työkalu suhteiden ja yhteisöjen rakentamiseen. Työpajassa tutkitaan, voiko yleisö olla muutakin kuin katsojia: tietynlainen yhteisö, joka toimii erilaisissa koreografioissa sysäten liikkeelle muita aisteja ja uusia poliittisia ja julkisia mahdollisuuksia.
Työpaja toteutetaan osana Borysin ja Stokłosan Nykytaidetila Kutomon elokuista työskentelyresidenssiä. Työpajaan tarvitset mukaan mukavat vaatteet, tanssia voi paljain jaloin tai sukilla. Työpajan kielenä on englanti. Työpaja on suunnattu ensisijassa tanssi- ja esitystaiteen ammattilaisille ja opiskelijoille.

Aleks Borys and Marysia Stokłosa: PUBLICA
PUBLICA is a movement and choreography workshop lead by dance artists Aleks Borys and Marysia Stokłosa. Using dance practices and tools from movement improvisation, the double meaning of the word publica in Polish language is explored. As a component of res-publica, the word indicates towards something common, (being the root of the word republic and the word commonwealth); as public (widz in Polish) the word refers to the audience signifying their vision as the main sense of perception (to see in Polish is widzieć). What kind of public is being activated through choreography, is the question that motivates the research and workshops of Borys and Stoklosa.
While the artists understands dance as the movement of life, the property of being in the body, choreography is here the primary form of establishing constellations, organizations and groups. In this sense, it is therefore a tool for building relationships and communities. They want to check whether the theater audience can also be established other than just as spectators; or as a community, it can function in a different choreography, triggering also other senses and, consequently, a new political and public potential.
The workshop is realized as part of an artistic residency of Borys and Stokłosa at Contemporary Art Space Kutomo in August. Please come with comfortable training cloths and be ready to dance barefoot or in socks. The workshop is given in English. The workshop is primarily targeted for artists working in the fields of dance and performance, as well as for students.
