Aapo Nikkasen teoksessa Joy Machines yleisö hypnotisoidaan ja johdatetaan kohtaamaan kone, joka on suunniteltu tuottamaan onnellisuutta napin painalluksella. Hypnoosin aikana osallistujat kokevat voimakkaita, moniaistisia onnellisuuden tuntemuksia. Teos tarkastelee haluamme löytää välittömiä emotionaalisia ratkaisuja ja pohtii, miten ymmärrämme ja koemme tietoisuutemme ja hyvinvointimme teknologian kautta. Osittain Saaren kartanon residenssissä kehitetty esitys käsittelee hypnoosia, tulevaisuudentutkimusta, nykyajan ahdistusta, onnellisuuden etsintää ja ihmisen muuttuvaa suhdetta teknologiaan.
Joy Machines on osa New Performance Turku Biennalen ohjelmistoa. Esityksestä koetaan sekä suomen- että englanninkieliset toteutukset.

Kansainvälinen performanssitaiteen tapahtuma New Performance Turku Biennale järjestetään Turussa 2.–7.9.2025. Biennaalin teema, Käännekohta, tarkastee muutosta, ruumiillisuutta ja selviytymistä maailmassa, jota leimaavat ympäristösuru, yhteiskunnalliset kriisit ja muuttuvat identiteetit. Esitykset levittäytyvät eri puolille Turkua museoihin, teattereihin, gallerioihin sekä kaupunkitilaan. Biennaalissa nähdään teokset 25 taiteilijalta. Performanssit rakentuvat muun muassa rituaaleina, protesteina ja intiimeinä läsnäolon tekoina. Biennaalin ohjelma on yleisölle maksuton. newperformance.fi
Ehkä-tuotannossa noudatetaan turvallisemman tilan ohjeistusta. Valitettavasti Nykytaidetila Kutomon tilat eivät ole esteettömät. Rakennuksessa on portaita, eikä siellä ole esteetöntä wc-tilaa.
New Performance Turku Biennale: Aapo Nikkanen: Joy Machines
In the performance Joy Machines by Aapo Nikkanen, the audience is hypnotised and introduced to a machine designed to produce happiness at the touch of a button. Under hypnosis, participants undergo intense, multisensory experiences of happiness. The work investigates contemporary society’s desire for instant emotional solutions and examines how technology mediates human consciousness and the search for well-being. Developed in part during Nikkanen’s stay at Saari Residence, the performance delves into futures research, contemporary anxiety, the pursuit of happiness, and our evolving relationship with technology.
Joy Machines is part of the New Performance Turku Biennale programme. There are Finnish and English versions of the performance.

The international performance art festival New Performance Turku Biennale will take place in Turku from September 2nd to 7th, 2025. The theme of the biennale, On the Threshold, explores transformation, corporeality, and survival in a world marked by ecological grief, societal crises, and shifting identities. Performances will take place across Turku in museums, theatres, galleries, and urban public spaces. The biennale features works by 25 artists. The performances unfold as rituals, protests, and intimate acts of presence. All events in the New Performance Turku Biennale programme are free of charge. newperformance.fi
