Jouni Järvenpää ja Maija Reeta Raumanni: Valkoinen valas

Yhtäkkiä vedestä ilmestyi valtava massa ja kohosi suoraan ilmaan. Se oli valas.
– Joseph C. Hartin Miriam Coffin eli Valaanpyytäjä

Valkoinen valas on tekijöiden yritys löytää esitykselle oma, abstrakti totuutensa samankaltaisella pakkomiellettä lähentelevällä intohimolla, jolla Melvillen romaanin kapteeni Ahab valaansa tahtoo löytää.

– Ismael kapteeni Ahabin hulluudesta

– Ismael valkoisesta valaasta

Jouni Järvenpää and Maija Reeta Raumanni: The White Whale

Suddenly a mighty mass emerged from the water, and shot up perpendicularly into the air. It was the whale.
– Miriam Coffin or the Whale Fisherman by Joseph C. Hart

The White Whale is a performance of unpretentious movement and indescribable atmospheres. In the expanding landscape of the abstract, an image of a white whale is found and presented, finally causing the capsizing of everything.

The White Whale, a performance by dance artists Jouni Järvenpää and Maija Reeta Raumanni departs from Herman Melville’s novel Moby Dick; or The Whale (1851). The White Whale is the makers’ objective to find the specific, abstract truth of this particular performance, much like Melville’s captain Ahab’s objective is to find the white whale – with a passion that borders on obsession. The novel works as a toolbox for the choreographers and the structure of the book as the basis for the choreography.

But vain to popularize profundities, and all truth is profound.
– Ishmael on captain Ahab’s madness

The White Whale is a new work by Järvenpää and Raumanni. It is a continuation of the artists’ previous work Arrangements of Ruins and Visions (2013), a choreography that focused on the abstract in a dance performance.

– – and yet so mystical and well nigh ineffable was it, that I almost despair of putting it in a comprehensible form.
– Ishmael on the white whale
