Bridge Over Troubled Water (2016) on performanssiryhmä MSL:n (Antti Jussila ja Jari Kallio) ja taiteilija Jaakko Pallasvuon yhteistyö. Simon & Garfunkelin albumin mukaan nimetty videoteos on pyrkimys purkaa yhtä nykyhetkemme suurinta kysymystä, ilmastonmuutosta, intuitiivisen, subjektiivisen ja fiktiivisen kautta.
On vuosi 1967, 2015, 2515, 10000 jKr. Simon ja Garfunkel matkaavat ajassa etsien vastausta ilmastokriisin aiheuttamaan, yhä kasvavaan suruun ja ahdistukseensa. Tapahtumapaikat vaihtuvat tunnistettavista turkulaista maisemista isoihin esiintymislavoihin ja Lapin lumisiin tuntureihin. Duon keskinäinen dynamiikka rakoilee, teoksen tekemiseen liittyvät valinnat arveluttavat, huolestuneisuuden ja syyllisyyden taakka painaa. Ilmastonmuutos ei ole idea vaan ilmapiiri, kulttuurillinen henki, joka läpäisee kaiken. Raskas, paksu musta pilvi, joka estää nousemasta sängystä. Onko ilmastonmuutoksen ajatteleminen kuoleman ajattelemista, kertojaääni kysyykin.
Itsereflektoiva tarina risteilee ja assosioi moniin suuntiin leikitellen itsekritiikillä ja itseironialla. Ajallisista, kuvallisista ja musiikillista kerrostumista muodostuu kiinnostava kokonaisuus, joka pitää katsojaa tiukasti imussaan. Bridge Over Troubled Water tiivistää ajassamme vallitsevan mentaliteetin; olemme umpikujassa mutta haluamme olla toiveikkaita, asiallisia ja hyödyksi. Riittääkö, jos ilmaisee huolestuneisuutensa lauluilla? Ehkä pitäisi vain yrittää unohtaa? Simon ja Garfunkel häipyvät näkyvistämme matkallaan kohti arktista horisonttia.

XS Vol.10: MSL ja Jaakko Pallasvuo: Bridge Over Troubled Water
Bridge Over Troubled Water (2016) is a collaboration between the performance collective MSL (Antti Jussila & Jari Kallio) and artist Jaakko Pallasvuo. The videowork, named after Simon & Garfunkel’s seminal album, strives to unravel the greatest question of our time – the climate change – through intuitive, subjective and fictive means.
It’s 1967, 2015, 2515, 10 000 AD and Simon and Garfunkel travel through time searching for remedy for their growing pain and anxiety caused by the climate crisis. The setting of the events shift from recognizable landscapes of Turku to big bandstands or snowy Lappish fells. Duo’s dynamics crack when the choices affecting the artwork become dubious and when the burden of worrying guilt simply is too much to take. Climate change is not merely an idea but more alike ’an athmosphere’, a cultural spirit or zeitgeist that transmutes everything. It is this heavy dark black cloud that makes you not wanting to get out of bed. Is the deliberation of climate change like contemplating death, the protagonist asks.
The self-reflecting narrative of the work crisscrosses in a freely associative way, playfully self-critical and ironic at the same time. Temporal, pictorial and musical layers make out an enchanting and immersing whole, that keeps the viewer it its grip. Bridge Over Troubled Water zooms into the prevalent dilemma of our age; we are at dead-end but still strive to be hopeful, decently proper and of use to society. Is it enough that we just sing away our sorrows or should we just forget it all as Simon and Garfunkel disappear from our view into arctic horizon.
