Sooloesseessään Ferns Vespa Laine pyrkii luomaan suljetun, itsenäisesti toimivan ekosysteemin, jossa valo, fotosynteesin perusta, toimii sen alkuperäisessä tarkoituksessaan, elämän lähteenä. Teoksen lähtökohtana on Laineen vuonna 2014 perustama pullopuutarha, jossa kasvit elävät omassa biosfäärissään tuottaen ja kierrättäen hapen, veden ja ravinteet. Puutarhassa kannella suljettu purkki on oma minimaailmansa, joka tarvitsee vain valoa. Sooloesseen symbolina toimii saniainen.
XS-festivaalilla Fernsistä esitetään work-in-progress -versio, teoksen senhetkinen verso.

XS Vol.9: Vespa Laine: Ferns
In her solo essay Ferns Vespa Laine attempts to create closed, independent ecosystem in which light, base of photosynthesis serves its original function as a source of life. The basis of the work is formed by a bottle garden Laine founded in 2014. Living in their own biosphere plants recycle oxygen, water and nutrients. The miniature world of a closed jar works independently and needs only light. Symbol of the solo essay is a fern.
In the XS festival Laine will present the work-in-progress version of Ferns, a then-current sprout of the work.
