Miltä hidastuminen kuulostaa?
Rest as a … on installaatiomainen esitystapahtuma. Teos on avoin kutsu lepäämisen merkityksen tarkastelulle. Se luo tilan, jossa joutilaisuus, ajan tuhlaileva käyttö ja lepäämisen itseisarvo nostetaan keskiöön. Installaatio tuo esiin arkisten asioiden yhdessä harjoittamisen merkityksen ja erityisyyden sekä niissä piilevän parantavan voiman.
Teoksen ensimmäinen osa toteutui lokakuussa 2023 osana taiteilijayhdistys Arten, Ehkä-tuotannon ja osuuskunta Poesian uni² -tapahtumaa Turun yliopiston sisä- ja ulkotiloissa. Esitysinstallaation toinen osa esitetään Ehkä-tuotannon XS – Uuden tanssin ja esitystaiteen festivaalilla Nykytaidetila Kutomolla marras-joulukuussa 2023. Kolmas osa teoksesta on nähtävissä vuonna 2024.

Eséte Sutinen on helsinkiläinen pitkän linjan tanssi- ja esitystaiteilija. Sutinen on työskennellyt suomalaisen taiteen kentällä jo yli 20 vuoden ajan. Hän aloitti työskentelyn freelancer-tanssijana vuonna 2002 ja työskentelee laaja-alaisesti tanssijana ja esiintyjänä erilaisissa tanssin, teatterin, performanssin, installaation, oopperan ja esitystaiteen risteymissä. Hän on valmistunut tanssitaiteen maisteriksi Taideyliopiston Teatterikorkeakoulusta vuonna 2005. Sutisen ensimmäinen koreografinen työskentely toteutui viisiosaisessa Pelon ja Empatian Kartat -teoskokonaisuudessa vuonna 2017 Kajaanin taidemuseossa ja Routa Companyn Generaattori-näyttämöllä. Koreografisessa työssään Sutinen on kiinnostunut kehollisuuden artikulaatioista, vapauden ja lepäämisen teemoista sekä herkkyyden ja empatian voimasta.
Biret Haarla Pieski on tanssija, koreografi ja esitystaiteilija kotoisin Utsjoelta, Suomen puolelta Saamenmaata. Työssään hän syventyy kysymyksiin liittyen ympäröivään luontoon sekä alkuperäiskansojen oikeuksiin käyttäen esitystaidetta keinona herättää emotionaalisia reaktioita sosiaalisiin ja poliittisiin kysymyksiin. Haarla Pieski pyrkii kanavoimaan liikkeitä ja energioita keskittymällä nykyhetkeen rationaalisuuden ylittävänä jaettuna kokemuksena. Hänen työskentelynsä keskittyy eri hahmojen ja elävien olentojen ominaislaadun, rytmin ja fyysisyyden ruumiillistamiseen liikkeen avulla, minkä kautta hän on kiinnostunut etsimään, miten lähestyä poliittisia teemoja keskittyen voimaannuttavaan yhteyden luomiseen toisiinsa sekä rehellisestä kohtaamisesta.
Čiske-Jovsset Biret Hánsa Outi Gáddjá, Gáddjá Haarla Pieski on saamelainen esitystaiteilija, tanssija ja koreografi Utsjoelta, Suomen puolelta Saamenmaata. Taiteellisella työskentelyllään tanssin ja esiintymisen parissa hän jakaa kokemustaan liikkeiden täsmällisyydestä, syvyydestä, innokkuudesta ja jopa hulvattomasta leikistä. Inspiraatiota hän tuntee ollessaan kosketuksessa hänelle tärkeisiin elämää ylläpitäviin asioihin.
Zipora Ogola on muusikko, jonka pääsoitin on konserttikantele. Hän toimii esiintyjänä, säveltäjänä ja pedagogina erilaisten musiikkityylien parissa. Soolokantele- ja yhtyemusiikin säveltämisen ohella hän on säveltänyt ja äänisuunnitellut muun muassa teatteri-, liike- ja lausuntaesityksiä varten. Ogola työskentelee mieluusti myös improvisoidun musiikin parissa.
Festivaalilla noudatetaan Ehkä-tuotannon turvallisemman tilan ohjeistusta. Valitettavasti Nykytaidetila Kutomon tilat eivät ole esteettömät. Rakennuksessa on portaita, eikä siellä ole esteetöntä wc-tilaa.

How does slowing down sound?
Rest as a … is an installation-like performance event. The work is an open invitation to examine the meaning of rest. It creates a space where idleness, wasteful use of time and the absolute value of rest are brought to the centre. The installation brings out the meaning and specialness of doing everyday things together and the healing power hidden in them.
The first part of Rest as a … took place in October 2023 in and around the premises of the University of Turku as part of the joint site-specific uni² event of the artists’ association Arte, Ehkä-production and the co-operative publisher Poesia. The performance installation’s second part premieres at Ehkä-production’s XS – Festival for New Dance and Performance at Contemporary Art Space Kutomo in November-December 2023. The third part of the work will be seen in 2024.

Eséte Sutinen is an Ethiopian-Finnish dance and performance artist based in Helsinki. Sutinen has worked as a freelance dance artist for over 20 years in the Finnish art field. She has vast working experience ranging from contemporary dance and theatre productions to performance art and installations as well as in music videos, chamber opera projects and commercials. She holds a master’s degree from the Dance Department of the University of the Arts Helsinki. Sutinen started her choreographic work in 2017 together with four other freelance artists. Their collaboration created a five-part contemporary dance piece called Maps of Fear and Empathy presented in the Kajaani Art Museum and in Routa Company’s Generaattori stage. In her choreographic work she is fascinated by the articulation of corporeality, the different aspects of freedom and rest and the power of fragility and empathy.
Biret Haarla Pieski is a dancer, choreographer and performing artist from Ohcejohka, the Finnish side of Sápmi. She explores environmental themes and questions of indigenous rights through performance, by provoking emotional responses to social and political issues. By focusing on the present moment as a shared experience, her work channels movements and energies that transcend rationality. Through embodying the quality, rhythm and physicality of different characters and living beings, Haarla Pieski searches for an approach to political themes by focusing on the empowering aspect of establishing connection with each other and making honest contact.
Čiske-Jovsset Biret Hánsa Outi Gáddjá, Gáddjá Haarla Pieski coming from Dálvadas (Utsjoki) is a Sámi performing artist who works within dance, choreography, performance and activism. In her artistic work she thrives from strengthening her humoristic, joyful and healing experience of dance as in her duet with Biret Haarla Pieski Starting from Staring – Čalmmiid Čađa premiered in Beursschouwburg in Brussels 2022. She has also worked and performed with artists such as Pauliina Feodoroff, Satu Herrala, Outi Pieski and Eséte Sutinen.
Zipora Ogola is a musician specialised in the Finnish concert kantele. They work as a performer, composer and pedagogue in various music genres. In addition to composing music for solo kantele and several ensembles, they have composed music and done sound design for theatre, recitation and movement-related performances. Ogola enjoys working with improvised music.
The festival follows Ehkä-production’s safer space guidelines. Unfortunately, the space at Contemporary Art Space Kutomo is not fully accessible; there are stairs and there are no accessible toilets at the venue.
